Advanced Coastal Navigation Class Feb 14 ++
A team from Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla12-2, headed by Nancy Schimmelman and Frank Swift, will present an in-depth navigation course at the OYC. The class will consist of eight Wednesday night sessions from 6:30 - 9:00 pm. starting Feb. 14th. Students should plan to spend several additional hours each week on homework, doing navigation exercises to build skills.
The class will cover using the compass, charts, and other navigation tools to determine your position. It will include dead reckoning, piloting in coastal waters, and estimating the effects of tides and currents. The course also introduces aids such as radar and GPS, and it presents voyage and fuel planning.
Commenting on the course, Nancy Schimmelmann said that, "This is the class I took before we sailed to Mexico. I used what I learned in class to not only feel confident navigating around the Bay, but also to guide us safely along the coast to destination harbors."
